The third Prix Emile Hermès takes the theme ‘Time to yourself’ . We’re looking for thoughtful responses to contemporary lifestyles, postures, gestures, and the social and cultural needs of individuals everywhere, the things we have in common, and the things that set us apart, but which – when we choose to share them – become a source of rich spiritual renewal, the starting-point for new concepts, breaking with past stereotypes. The resulting objects – devices, compartments, small-scale architectural modules or items of furniture, produced using the simplest methods or the most sophisticated technology – should acknowledge and implement principles of sustainable development, reducing the planetary footprint of our species, soon to number some eight billion individuals.
For this reason, the jury of the Prix Emile Hermès asks entrants to take account of the many different issues affecting sustainable development, in their approach to the production and distribution of their designs.
Candidates are invited to submit designs for an object, machine, utensil, piece of furniture, architectural concept etc., carefully devised and formulated for a specific, practical function while at the same time proposing a formal, aesthetic concept of the highest quality. Each design will offer a lasting, sustainable alternative to existing everyday objects performing the functions stated in the competition’s theme. Multi-purpose, adaptable designs are also invited, incorporating uses and applications which may be discovered over the life the object.

La troisième édition du Prix Émile Hermès, à travers sa thématique "Un temps pour soi", impliquera une profonde observation des modes de vie, des postures, des gestuelles, des besoins sociaux et culturels des individus, de ce qui nous est commun, de ce qui nous est différent mais dont le partage est source de richesse d’esprit, ainsi qu’une capacité à créer hors des stéréotypes. Le dispositif, habitacle, petite architecture ou mobilier, qu’il soit envisagé de la façon la plus simple à produire ou mettant en jeu la technologie la plus pointue devra prendre en compte les principes de développement durable afin de réduire l’empreinte de l’homme sur une planète qui comptera bientôt 8 milliards d’habitants. Pour cette raison, le jury du Prix Émile Hermès demandera aux candidats d’intégrer ces multiples enjeux dans leur démarche de production et de diffusion.
La proposition du candidat devra se traduire par un meuble, un élément d’architecture, un dispositif, un habitacle etc. à la fonctionnalité étudiée et argumentée avec soin, et offrir une conception formelle de grande qualité. Cette proposition ne sera pas seulement une alternative, mais une nouvelle conception d’un moment ou d’un type de moment défini dans l’intitulé de la thématique. Ce dispositif pourra avoir de multiples usages. On sera libre d’aller d’une fonctionnalité très particulière à une fonction très générale. Il devra se présenter comme pérenne et/ou adaptable pendant toute la durée de sa vie.
