Technology Strategy Board & Nesta: Destination Local demonstrators

The Technology Strategy Board is investing up to £2.5m in projects that demonstrate the potential of hyperlocal media technologies to serve communities across the UK.
With our competition and programme partners Nesta, our aim is to encourage consortia to come forward with proposals for new technologies, concepts and systems which will help people connect more easily with their communities.
These innovations, offering access to news or content services specific to a town, single postcode or other small, geographically defined community, will then be tested and assessed for their technological and economic feasibility.
Projects must be collaborative and business-led. We expect to fund industrial research projects, in which a business partner will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs (60% for SMEs).
We expect to fund between three and five demonstrator projects across the UK, ranging in size from £700k to £1.4m in total costs.
Consortium partners can include businesses of any size, as well as academic organisations, although academic participation will be capped at 30% of the overall project costs. Projects will last between 12 and 18 months and may be deployed in specific geographical areas.
This is a two-stage competition that opens on 4 November 2013. The deadline for expressions of interest is at noon on 18 December 2013. A briefing event for potential applicants will take place on 8 November 2013 in London, with regional briefings taking place later in the month.
