Berwick Visual Arts is pleased to announce it second residency opportunity for visual artists in partnership with the Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) at Newcastle University - which specialises in teaching and research on rural development issues.
The residency is an opportunity for an artist working in any artform to respond to rural issues within the context of Berwick-upon-Tweed, to draw on the resources offered by the CRE to inform the production of new work and bring new approaches to rural research at the centre.
For this residency opportunity we interested in proposals that respond to theme ‘Beyond the Rural Idyll’ and question what and who is rural, local, authentic or vernacular and that explore rural life and society beyond idyllic representations.
Can art challenge perceptions associated with the rural idyll amongst policy makers, communities, artists, academics and create new, more complex and contested representations of the ‘rural’?
The residency opportunity is open to UK and internationally based artists.
The residency opportunity requires the applicant artist to have been out of college (BA graduate) for a minimum of 3 years. Those who have completed an MA and / or PhD are also welcome to apply.
The successful applicant will receive a budget of £8000 will be required to live and work in Berwick-upon-Tweed for 6 months with accommodation and studio facilities provided by Berwick Visual Arts. The artist will also have access to staff and resources at the Centre for Rural Economy, the Fine Art Department and Culture Lab at Newcastle University.
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS Wednesday 6 August at 5pm (UK Time).
